Building an Engine at Crewe Works', LMS poster, 1923-1947. Poster produced for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), showing an interior view of the Crewe Works, Cheshire, where steam locomotives are shown under construction. The Crewe Locomotive Works were originally founded in 1840, when the Great Junction company bought the Chester & Crewe Railway and large areas of land around the town. For the next 150 years an average of one locomotive a week was produced at Crewe. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971). Printed by McCorquodale & Co Limited.
