The inaugural Festival International du Film kicked-off on 1 September 1939; that month was used to extend the summer tourist season by an extra two weeks. However the fledgling festival only managed its opening night before being cancelled when France joined Britain in declaring war on Germany following Hitler's invasion of Poland.
