The Parthenon was built between 447- 432 BC and it remained in use as a temple of Athena for almost athousand years. The first serious catastrophe of the temple occurred probably in A.D. 267 and it was caused by fire. The original roof was destroyed at that time, together with the entire interior colonnade and the marble ceilings of the exterior colonnade. Seriously damaged were the columns of the hexastyle porches and the cella walls inside. However, the sculptured parts appear not to have suffered serious at that time. Sometime around the 5th century, when the old pagan beliefs had yield to Christianity, the building was converted into a church. An apse was built at the east end, necessitating the removal of part at least of the east frieze and the main entrance was from the west during that period. It is likely that the central figures of the east pediment were removed at the same time and it is all but certain that this was the occasion for the deliberate defacement of the metopes on the east, north and west sides
