Fencing

Fencing is the noble, historic art of offense and defense with the sword. The object is simple: for one fencer to hit another without being hit first. It's application is more complex, scientific and artistic. Fencing developed into a true sport in the 17th century when the sword was replaced as the basic weapon by gunpowder and firearms. Swordsmanship developed into a strategic finesse sport in which the objective became the touch vice the kill.
