Swedenby Henri Cassiers
Chemin de fer de I'Etat Neerlandais
Three women holding hands.Traditional costumes, canals and windmills - and one of the girls is holding a potted tulip! How Dutch can you get? The extra added attraction is a bright green locomotive pulling a train, since what we're advertising here is the Netherland State Railroad. Tradition and progress are presented in harmony by a distinguished Belgian painter and magazine reporter/illustrator turned posterist. Born in Antwerp, Cassiers became an aquarellist of note at an early age, placing his work at many exhibitions and earning various kudos. In the 1890s, he traveled as a roving magazine contributor. In poster work, he stays with his painterly style, most of the time depicting a folksy scene to which text is added.
