Billiards
by A. Gallice
Academie de Billard
Two stately gentlemen play a game of billiards while a third keeps score in the background. While other period posters show billiards as an occasion for light-hearted socializing, playing is a serious matter here - not a club but an academy for sober study and pursuit. The design - and the players' attention - is dominated by the smooth green expanse of felt, brightly illuminated by an unseen source of light. We are able to note the method of score-keeping, the distinguished quality of the participants and even the fine embroidery on one's silk vest in this wonderful document by an obscure artist.
