The Sokol was ostensibly a sports club devoted mainly to calisthenics, but secretly a patriotic Czech organization (forbidden under Austrian rule) trying to arouse nationalistic fervor among the Czech minority. The Sokol held quadrennial meetings, much like the Olympics, and this poster announces the 1912 edition-the last one still held under Austrian rule, as World War I, which started two years later, freed the Czechs from the Austrian domination.
