Kino Massam/Movies for the Masses
Aerial view of the front arches at Kino Massam, a Russian theater. When all private Russian film companies were abolished in 1923, film production and distribution was centralized under a single organizatoin, Goskino (Sovkino, after 1926). A separate department, Reklam Film, was organized under Yakov Ruklevsky to systematize the production of ilm posters. Bograd was one of the group of cutting-edge artists--including Nikolai Prusakov and Grigory Borisov, the Stenberg brothers, Mikhail Dlugach and Iosif Gerasimovich--that Ruklevsky put together for his stable. Bograd's stunning Constructivist poster here advertises not a film, but the opening of the Leningrad Art-Sound Movie Theater. We can see why Ruklevsky hired him.
