Charlie Chaplin in Charlie's Karriere
Because of WWI, this 1915 Charlie Chaplin short film (Work, in the U.S.) took some time to get to Germany. The image shows him beleaguered by a ladder. It seems amazing today that a 20-minute short would warrant a poster of its own, but Chaplins films were phenomenal- earning something like 65 billion (as estimated in 1950s terms) worldwide with admissions of only a nickel or dime. Because of WWI, this 1915 Essanay short - titled Work in the U.S. took some time to get to Germany, where it was distributed by Humboldt Film, Berlin. It features Charlie as the assistant to a slave driving house painter who makes him do all the work. On a single job he gets into trouble with his equipment, flirts with the maid, saves the owner from being cuckolded by his wifes admirer and causes an explosion in the kitchen- all in the 20 minutes a two reeler runs. The image shows him beleaguered by a ladder- not a great resemblance, but a terrific design!
