Palais de Glace Ice Skating Poster
Women and men putting ice skates on at Palais de Glace.Perhaps the most stunning aspect of this teeming design for the reopening of the popular Paris ice skating establishment is its realistic approach. Everything seems to be authentic, from the dressed-to-impress multitudes rendered intints that don't fly in the face of accurate period fashion to the matter-of-fact refresments to the chivalrous attendant. A magnificent poster that surrenders neither to allegory nor oversatement. Loir was born in Austria to French parents; he trained in Italy, and went to Paris in 1863. After fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he devoted himself exclusively to painting scenes of Paris, for which he won many awards (including the Legion of Honor) and remains best known. ""He was the painter of Paris 'par excellence,' seizing and interpreting its every aspect at every hour of the day"" (Benezit).
