1936 Hungarian Grand Prix Poster
Automobile racing on the beach with Hungarian flag waving overhead.Even thought the viewer is situated firmly in harm's way, it's difficult to deny the visceral graphic appeal of this Gerster design for the 1936 Hungarian Grand Prix, staged in Budapest and sponsored by the Royal Hungarian Automobile Club, whose blue-crossed pennantis prominantly displayed up-left in the company of the national banner. Pest-born Gerster studied in his home town before travelling abroad to the United States and continuing his studies in Paris. Upon his return to the bridge-unified Budapest, he specialized in portraits, landscapes and posters, exhibiting at the National Gallery, as well as instructing at the School of Applied Arts.
