Mucha Nouveau Bleu Deschampes Poster
This is the first of two bluing posters meant for store display, as is evident from the words En Vente Ici (On Sale Here) In the design. It shows a lady at a washtub, evidently satisfied with the results. The heraldic crests at top have the initials DF for Mr. Freund-Deschamps, the manufacturer. A bluing was an essential laundry product in the days when natural cotton and linen were the predominant clothing materials. Both have a tendency to turn yellow during washing, which may be counteracted if a preparation of blue dyes is mixed into the water. The need for bluing was gradually eliminated with the introduction of the necessary agents to detergents, and with the advent of colorfast fabrics. Rare!
