Italyby Marcello Dudovich
Grado Swim and Diving Wear Poster
Wrapped up in a moment of ecstasy, this stunning bather prepares to take the plunge in this Dudovich promotion for the Northern Italian port city of Grado. Keeping things to a graphic minimum, the artist hits the highlights of the seaside resort with a growing reputation - nothing but fields of the deepest blue and the reverse silhouette of the Old Quarter; in other words, the surrounding waters of the lagoon that give the town a certain grandeur, and the Cathedral of Santa Eufemia, that steeps in the erg in tradition. At the age of 19, Dudovich arrived in Italy from his native Trieste. After an initial stint at Ricordi, he was hired at Chappuis in Bologna. He stayed in their employ until 1905, at which point he rejoined Ricordi, where he established himself as Italy's only posterist, largely as a result of his refined, yet lively, posters for the Mele department store.
