Fish
by Jean Carlu
Aquarium de Monaco
Jean Carlu's 1927 poster is evocative of the depths, inviting us to the Monaco aquarium. This poster for the Aquarium of Monaco is Carlu's finest work; he offers us an aquatic collage, with stylized fish and eel silhouettes spotlighted against a stark black background, which works much better by suggesting the underwater mood rather than attempting to depict any particular species. In an interview in 1927, Carlu himself states that he sought to simplify and to impress; if, in the process, he abandons scientific accuracy, he does so to achieve optimum visual effect.
