Marxer learned decorative painting from his father and the Applied Arts Department of the Technical School in Wintherthur. After further studies in Munich and traveling throughout Europe, he settled in Kilchberg to begin his artistic career. He created a body of painterly works, mostly in oils, but also worked in graphics, especially woodcuts and book illustrations, plus murals for public buildings.
