1912 Stockholm Games Poster
Nude athlete waving Swedish flag for the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.By the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, there were 2,504 athletes (including Native American Jim Thorpe and a total of 57 women) from 28 countries--and there was, for the first time, an official poster. It depicted a nude athlete representing Sweden in the vanguard of a flag procession. Sweden was in the vanguard indeed: Despite some strategically placed streamers, the poster was considered too daring to be distributed in some countries. It was nevertheless printed in 16 languages--this is the German version--and in three formats, this being the largest. Hjortzberg was a professor and then director at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.
